How To Clean Travertine

Travertine, one of the most common natural stones used in interior design, has a beautiful range of colors and textures that make it great compliment to any home decor. Designers use travertine for tile flooring, showers, backsplashes, kitchen countertops, and vanities.

Although this natural stone does not require an extensive amount of maintenance, improperly cleaning travertine will dull polished surfaces and cause unsightly etching.

About Travertine

Travertine is a compacted version of limestone that forms along streams, especially where there are waterfalls, hot or cold springs. It often has a fibrous or concentric appearance and is most commonly white, tan, cream, or variations of these colors.

One of travertine’s most notable characteristics are the pitted holes and troughs in its surface. Depending on your desired look, these holes may be filled with grout or left open.

Like all natural stones, travertine is porous, so unless it is properly sealed it will absorb liquids which can cause unsightly staining. It is also soluble in acid and will become noticeably damaged if the wrong cleaning products are used.

Cleaning travertine can be simple and easy if you use the right products.

Avoid cleaners with vinegar, lemon or orange in them because they are acidic. Also avoid harsh or abrasive chemicals such as bleach or ammonia which seep into the pores of the travertine, causing more damage. Instead, use a pH balanced natural stone cleaner like Green Clean when cleaning travertine.
