Limestone Surfaces

Limestones are usually formed in warm and calm shallow water bodies. Shellfish, corals, algae, and other organisms produce vast amounts of calcium carbonate shells. Accumulation of their skeletal debris is lithified into limestone, which is why it’s composed of 50% calcite – the most stable polymorph of calcium carbonate. Depending on the conditions under which this sedimentary rock is formed or the type of metamorphism, its variants can be granular, massive, clastic or crystalline.

Limestone holds an important place in the agricultural, chemical and construction industries. It can be used for window sills, floor tiles, staircases, kitchen islands, countertops, and backsplashes. It serves as a suitable material for bathroom vanity tops. Contact My Clean Grout for honing, polishing cleaning or sealing of your limestone surfaces. Since ancient times limestone has been prized for its beauty and elegance. Used in both art and construction, it is frequently associated with affluence and refined tastes. Keeping your limestone in pristine condition, however, requires special care. Cleaning limestone properly will preserve its shine and brilliance for as long as you own it.

Limestone flooring, shower, and counters come in two basic finishes:

Polished Limestone

Polished limestone is finished to a high sheen that shows off the beauty and grain of the stone. However, the finish can be slick and slippery, especially when wet. One strategy is to make liberal use of area rugs to protect from slipping. A Limestone Maintenance Program is suggested to keep polished marble looking consistently at there best.

Honed Limestone

A honed finish has mild reflectivity with a very clean velvety appearance. The stones smooth surface will have a little reflection of light. A honed finish is flatter and will almost always appear lighter in color. When a polished stone is honed, the depth, hues, and veins that were once very prevalent may be reduced. The degree of honing depends on the stone but may vary from light to heavy.

Our honing process leaves your floor looking like velvet!

Caring for Limestone.

Like all natural stones, limestone is porous. This means it can absorb liquids, most of which will stain and damage your limestone. To protect your investment, a sealer should be applied when your limestone is installed. Your limestone sealer, however, can be worn away by common household substances including cleaning products. So when cleaning marble be sure you always use a pH neutral stone cleaner. We recommend Green Clean, a My Clean Grout product. Call 780-417-9080 to find a location near you to purchase a bottle of Green Clean.

Avoid using harsh cleaning chemicals, including bleach wipes, vinegar, and cleaners with lemon or orange in them. In fact, most cleaning products you find in your grocery store will damage your marble and marble sealer.

How to Clean Limestone Surfaces

The first step in properly cleaning limestone surfaces is to dab – (do not wipe!!) any spills as soon as they occur. Wine, certain cosmetics, and most food condiments are acidic; they will wear away your limestone sealer and etch your limestone (etching is permanent damage that will have to be polished away by a professional).

Next, clean away crumbs, dust and other bits of dirt using something soft, like a microfiber cloth.

Finally, clean your limestone with a specially formulated, pH neutral stone cleaner such as Green Clean Used on a daily basis, this product will keep your marble clean, and help keep the polish longer. Do not use vinegar or other products with an acidic nature.

How to Clean Limestone Showers

For particularly tough soap scum or mineral build-up, treat your shower with Green Clean in a spray bottle.

We don not use products that can
damage a floor like waxes or crystallization.

How to Clean Limestone Floors

Grit and dirt tracked in from outdoors can scratch the surface of your limestone floors. You can keep them looking beautiful simply by dust-mopping with a microfiber cloth on a daily basis. When a more thorough cleaning is necessary, spray your marble floors with Green Clean and wipe clean for a streak-free shine.
